I pull my car into the parking lot, anticipation already buzzing under my skin. Easing into a vacant spot (though all of them are vacant, at this hour), I turn off the ignition and allow myself a moment of sheer joy at the prospect of my next few hours alone. As I open the door of my car and climb out, the saltwater air fills my nostrils and the wind runs its fingers through my hair.
Quickly, quickly now, I grab my belongings--bag and towel and chair and umbrella--and lock my car up tight. Minutes later, my feet are in the sand, and I'm in heaven.
I kick off my shoes. The sand, still slightly chilled from the night before, feels good between my toes. The sun is barely risen--it's just past seven a.m.--and the beach is deliciously deserted. I stake my claim on a small plot of sand, plop down my chair, and decide to leave the umbrella for later. I want nothing to separate me from the sky, the clouds, the sun. I want to revel in the warm air. Let Mother Nature embrace me today.
I walk down to the surf, and let the waves break around my ankles. It is unusually chilly for this time of year. I wonder if there's a storm brewing beyond the horizon, but I clear my head of those thoughts, wanting to enjoy this moment without worry of rain clouds. A solitary paddle surfer inches by slowly, no doubt enjoying this beautiful summer sunrise as much as me. I stand and watch him, until he is under the sun. My chair beckons me, and so, I take a seat and stare at the sky for awhile instead.
The week's worth of stresses slowly melt away. There is no paperwork, no phone calls, no rush and bustle here. There is only the wind. The sky. The water. The smells I love permeate my senses: salt. Fresh air. The sweet smell of sunscreen, like so much coconut. I close my eyes and drift, letting the magic of the sea envelop me. After a moment (an hour?) the caw! caw! of seagulls wake me from my reverie. They take flight, the black tips of their wings shiny from the morning dew.
The sun rises higher in the blue sky, and my worries about a summer squall completely disappear. The day grows warmer still, and I know my few hours of solitude will soon come to an end. Still-sleepy children will race with delight to the surf, while parents smile and take pictures and set up camp amidst the dunes. Joggers will begin to parade by, sweat glistening on their tanned skin, arms pumping to the music in their ears that I cannot hear. Dogs of all ages and shapes and sizes will join the children in the water. And my quiet moment with nature will be over.
But that's ok. I've come prepared for the beach invasion. As I hear a child's squeal of glee over my shoulder, I slide my paperback out of my bag. The page is still folded down, and slightly damp, from last week's beach trip. I settle back in the chair, burying my feet in the sand as I stretch out, and dive into a book I've already read three times. The sun warms my shoulders, the sounds of people playing drift away, and I let the sea soothe my frayed nerves. I might take a nap later. Or a quick dip in the ocean. My schedule is wide open. The only plans for the day are to relax. Enjoy. Indulge.

I Read, Therefore I Am (A Mrs. Readalot Linky Party)
My favorite part of every day? Curling up in bed, teeth brushed and face washed, and delving into a really great book. In fact, if it's a really, really GOOD book, you're likely to find me face-first into it again as soon as I wake up in the morning. Truth be told, I'd rather be reading than doing just about anything else. It's a passion that started when I was very young, and has stuck with me these past 30 years.

When Mrs. Readalot (AKA Simoney) sent me an email asking me to participate, I jumped at the chance to share my love of books with my readers. January's assignment?
"Share the book that kept you spellbound throughout the holidays."
*moment of truth* I re-read the first half of the Harry Potter series over the Christmas break. There's something about twinkly lights and holiday feasts that make me yearn for Hogwarts. So...there wasn't much *new* reading that took place over the holidays, though I was just as enamored with the wizarding world for the 8th (9th? 12th?) time as I was the very first.
HOWEVER, there was a book I TALKED about more than any other book over the holidays. As in...pushed it like a drug dealer in a busy section of town. And that book is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.
There are precisely 3 serials that I have devoured in my life, anticipating each book like a long awaited birthday party. I've already mentioned one: Harry Potter by JK Rowling. The second is the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King (there are actually 3 more books after the four pictured in the link.) And the third? The Hunger Games Trilogy.
When I say that I could not put this book down, I truly mean that I Could. Not. Put. It. Down. I started it one evening back in October, stayed up until the wee hours of the morning, fell asleep with my Kindle on my chest, woke up and immediately kept reading until I got to the end.
Then I took a shower, ate some food, and downloaded the second book (Catching Fire) in the trilogy. Which was devoured in the same fashion as book one. The third book (Mockingjay) was no different.
In case you live under a rock and haven't heard of the popular series (which Hollywood already scooped up and claimed for their own) let me give you a brief synopsis, in hopes that I can ensnare you into reading this amazing novel.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen has grown up in the post-apocalyptic world of Panem, in the poorest of 12 districts, fighting to keep her family alive. Her father, killed in a mine explosion 4 years before, left Katniss with the skills she would need to poach game from the woods around the Seam, and keeping her mother and sister fed has been her only goal. So it goes, day in and day out, until the one day of the year every family dreads: Reaping Day. The Capitol, the ruling power over the districts, holds a lottery each year to choose 2 tributes from each district--one boy and one girl, both under the age of 18--to compete in the Hunger Games. In televised event watched by every member of society, the children are forced to fight in an arena to the death. The last one standing is declared the winner, and becomes a celebrity in a world that thinks of death as entertainment.
Sounds pretty heavy, huh?
Truth be told, when I heard about this book, my immediate thought was, "Wow, that sounds cheery." (<-----Sarcasm Alert) But after being told by no less than 10 friends that this book was an amazing read, I found myself drawn to it. Ten pages in, and I was totally consumed. The world is so clearly defined you can practically feel the coal dust settling into your skin. The terror you feel for each child chosen is palpable. And the hatred that creeps up in your gut for the Capitol is all-consuming.
But what I love so much about this book is the author's capability of making you fall in love with the main character, Katniss Everdeen, despite her slightly prickly exterior. She's not the snuggly, weak, whiny teenager you find in so many other young adult novels. Love and romance are two words she's never concerned herself with. The only thing she has ever been focused on in her life is survival--and THAT'S what makes her such a fierce competitor in these games.
For me, a winning book has to have three elements: 1) a compelling storyline, 2) an author who knows how to weave a good story (in a well-written sort of way) and 3) characters that make you want to love them, fight for them, cry with them, and cheer for them. The Hunger Games fulfills all 3 requirements and more.
I give it four thumbs up.
Seriously gang, it's rare for me to love a book so much. (Just ask my book clubbies about "Dune.") I know it's one of those series I'll read over and over and over again.
As if THAT'S not exciting enough...they're making a movie!!!!
So...read any good books lately? Maybe you'd like to join my linky! Just write a review and link up below! If you're read The Hunger Games, I'd love to hear your take on it. If not, I'm always looking for another great book to read, so if there's a title that kept you mesmerized over the holidays, I'd love to hear about that, too. You've got a whole month to share!! And make sure you drop by GreatFun4Kids, and check out Simoney's gorgeous blog that's all about family, crafts, and fun.
I've mentioned before that my love of reading led me to join the world's most fabulous book club. Well, ladies and gents, I'm here to tell you that I've actually found ANOTHER book club to join, just as awesome as the first!!! And today, I'm hosting January's linky party for Mrs. Readalot's Bookclub (found at GreatFun4Kids).

The Comment of Awesomeness
Last night, I got an email from a new reader. He had commented on a blog post from way back when. To say that it's the awesomest comment I've ever received wouldn't be 100% true, because so many of you leave such thoughtful replies to my blog on a regular basis.
But to say that this particular comment made my face hurt from laughing so hard--that would be an accurate statement.
It had little to do with the content as a whole (though every remark made me swell with pride). Truth be told, there were two things about this comment that made it blog-worthy.
Let me back pedal a little and tell you that the post he commented on was about my predilection for over-analyzing everything. From what you say to me to how you say it to the inflection in your voice and the glint in your eye---I'm still mulling it all over in my head thirtydays minutes later. It's probably my most annoying flaw (to other people. I find it most satisfying.)
This reader (we'll call him Professor X) could not only relate to the post, he also left me a link which led me to the most hilarious list of phrases you wish you could say at work but can't. Some of these were so epically awesome, they should be made into posters and mouse-pads and other office paraphernalia.
I won't share all of them here because, well, it's someone else's blog. But, I will share with you my favorite of the bunch. To say that I deal with..."difficult individuals" on a regular basis is a bit of an understatement. How I wish I could throw them off with a statement like this:
Because, well, not only is that hilarious, but it's also true. And as we all know...:
The second thing I loved about Professor X's comment: he mentioned how he'd found my blog. He didn't stumble upon it based on a friend's suggestion. He didn't find me on Facebook or Twitter. Professor X didn't even use his superpowers to locate me on the interwebs. (That was a comic book joke, people.)
Nay, Professor X simply did a Google search. For the phrase "squashed dancing banana."
It's official. I've made it as a blogger. Someone googled the most random word sequence EVER and found Abby Gabs.
Thanks to Professor X (you know who you are) for the awesomely awesome comment. It seriously made my whole day. If this were a video blog, I would totally cue up "Looks Like We Made It" by Barry Manilow right now. OMG...THAT would be awesome, too!!

It's a Brand New Shiny Year! (You Knew That Already...Right?)
On New Year's Day, my sister-in-law wished her friends and family a happy new year in a grand proclamation. It was so profound, in fact, I've decided to share it here.
She is wise. She is eloquent. She is eleven and a half. (She also writes a blog.)
Every person on the face of the planet faces a new year with goals/ambitions/resolutions. Call them what you will, we all hope to be better every January first. I am no different. Each year my goals grow less and less specific. My list-o'-resolutions has shrunken in size as my age has increased. I try to focus more on family, friends, fun. But this year, I want to be better at lots of things. I want to improve. I want to actually meet one of my goals...maybe even surpass it.
I mentioned in a previous post that my only new year's resolutions this year were to be nicer to myself, and to refrain from growing anymore kidney stones. Well, part of being nicer to me includes being nicer to my body. And that means eating better, being more active, and being smarter about food.
You guessed it, readers. I'm joining the cattle call of 66% of Americans who resolve to lose weight in 2012! Woo!
Part of me feels like this:
The other part of me feels like this:
*Honesty Alert*-----> I have promised myself that I was going to lose weight every January since 2003. I have failed to accomplish that goal every single time. I don't know why this year is going to be any different. I can't promise that it will be. But I have some new weapons on my side of the trenches. And I think they'll make all the difference in the world.
My Personal Atom Bomb? I have a workout buddy/personal trainer. Yes, she is my best friend. And yes, we'll probably be splitting a bottle of red wine at the end of every week while we commiserate over the unfairness in the truth of our waist-to-hip ratios. But the truth of the matter is that I have someone who isn't only willing to support me through this journey, but will be actively taking it WITH me. What a concept. If I weren't so scared of her Army-inspired workouts, I'd be flat out thrilled.
I'm not going to turn my blog into a wellness, fitness blog. You're not going to get daily rants about my elliptical, or regular information regarding my weigh-ins. I'm sure there will be some funny moments that I'll share regarding exercise (because let's face it. Exercise is funny.) But don't expect much to change around here this year.
Well...except for my header. And my button. And the basic look of my blog in general...(fingers crossed that you like what you see!)

It's the Little Things That Make Me Happy (Literally.)
While taking down the Christmas tree yesterday, my husband pulled out the shoe box containing my New Kids on the Block Action Figures and shoved it in my face.
B: What are you going to do with these guys?
A: I don't know. All the shelf space in the house is taken by books or robots. *shoots Brian a pouty face*
B: *looking scared for the future of his Transformers shelf* We'll come up with something.
Thirty minutes later, he comes to me, a smile from ear to ear.
B: I know what we can do with your New Kids dolls.
A: Action figures.
B: Right. Action figures.
A: Ok, I'm all ears.
B: What if we take them out of their boxes...
A: GASP! But they're in MINT CONDITION!
B: Hear me out, woman!
A: *Clutches her proverbial pearls*
B: What if we take them out of their boxes and put them in one of the cubby holes on the desk?
A: <still not convinced> But...
B: You can pose them however you like...
A: <closer to convinced by still not quite there> But...
B: ...and you can put your Donnie Wahlberg calendar in front...
A: <delight washes over her as she remembers awesome desk calendar purchased in October>
B: ...and it'll be like your own personal tiny New Kids concert every day!
A: <APPLAUSE> It's genius! I love it!
I held my breath as I broke open the first package. I kept having to tell myself that they were purchased for me to enjoy, not resell. I'm not a collector by trade, even though my instincts were SCREAMING at me to keep their original boxes in tact. But honestly, after I broke the first seal, I was literally giggling with glee.
Brian kindly offered to help me arrange my shelf (as he is a bit of a pro at it.) So I opened the boxes and handed him each New Kid, watching as he posed them just so.
And he was 100% right. I totally LOVE it.
Now all I need are some tiny little lights to hang inside. And maybe a small New Kids poster to hang behind them.
And a teeny weeny smoke machine.
They make those, right?
