WARNING: This post may contain spoilers about the latest movie in the Spiderman franchise (The Amazing Spiderman). I won't give away any MAJOR plot details, but if you'd rather be left completely in the dark, then this post may not be for you. Just sayin'.

Fresh from a major victory over Donnie Wahlberg, Brian decided that yesterday was going to be a 100% Abby-and-Brian, no distractions, Just Us Day. He treated me to lunch (sushi--yay!). We toodled around Target and World Market. We held hands. We talked about our bright future, discussed design ideas for our (eventual) new home, and weighed the pros and cons of Toyota versus Chevy for our (sooner-but-still-eventual) new car.

But the highlight of date day? An afternoon matinee viewing of "The Amazing Spiderman."

Now, let me be clear. Spiderman has never been one of my favorite Marvel characters. There are several reasons for that, the main one being...well....this:

More than 6 legs = demon from the depths of hell. Remember?

And while I enjoyed the first two movies in the last Spiderman series, I never particularly found Tobey Maguire to be the right choice for Peter Parker. Yes, he had the awkward, nerdy, outcast thing going on. But the slight-swagger and sarcasm? Maguire never had a chance. Not to mention the whole "jazz hands" incident of Spiderman 3 that left me cold in my theater seat.

James Brown? Seriously?

BUT, it was Abby-and-Brian, no holds barred, Just Us Day. And my hubby wanted to see "The Amazing Spiderman." In fact, he was downright excited about it. So, off we went, 3-D glasses in hand. As the theater went dark, Brian leaned over and whispered, "Looks like it's going to be a private screening." I glanced around and realized that, other than one dude sitting in the very back row, we were indeed the only ones in the room. "Cool," I whispered. "That way, when I scream about ALL THE SPIDERS, it'll be less embarrassing."

Brian laughed, squeezed my hand reassuringly, and said, "Don't worry, honey. It's just the ONE spider."

Bolstered by my husband's insistence that I'd only have to endure one creepy-crawly, I sat back and enjoyed the previews.

And then...

The movie started.

With a GIANT spider web literally CRAWLING with spiders across the ENTIRE screen.

I started to throw my shoe, but I've been told that isn't proper behavior while in a public setting. Even if you're trying to save yourself from arachnids that are trying to eat your face.

And it didn't stop there, readers. Oh, no. For instance, there's the scene where a curious Peter Parker wanders into the lab where the infamous infected spider lives. Expecting one spider in a test tube, I already had my eyelids at half mast when Peter let himself in to that room. The camera was zoomed in on his face, leaving the rest of the room totally out of focus. By the time I realized what I was looking at, it was too late.

It was an entire room dedicated to an enormous, circular web covered in radio-active spiders.

Just before I had the chance to close my eyes tight, Peter backed into the web and all the hell demons started falling down on him like so much rain.

(Author's note: I just threw up a little in my mouth.)

As promised, I screamed like a busty blonde in a slasher movie and dove for cover beneath my husband's arm.

Hours later, I was still traumatized by this scene in the movie. I had nightmares. Seriously. Here I sit, all wounded and stuff. So, I have a suggestion for Marvel. Let's pretend Peter Parker got bitten by something less scary, ok?

Problem solved.

PS: Look honey, I updated the scorecard!! And you're still winning!!

A Day of Stat-Keeping At Abby Gabs: The Man War Edition

My husband has always been my #1 Biggest Fan when it comes to my blog. In fact, just the other evening, he sat next to me on the couch, computer in his lap, and spent the better part of an hour sharing archived Abby Gabs with his friends on Facebook.

After sharing the links to some of his favorite "Brian" blogs, he abruptly closeed his laptop, cleared his throat, and turned to look at me. "Abby," he said, "I'm a little worried that the Donnie Wahlberg blogs are beginning to overshadow the Awesome Husband blogs."

Well, well.

"I think you need to institute some sort of scoreboard on your blog, to clearly depict how many blogs have been written about each of us. That'll keep you honest." Satisfied that he'd made his point, he turned back to watching the Olympics.

His little Man War diatribe got me thinking....maybe he's right. So I did what any dutiful wife/blogger would do. I pulled up my blog and went through EVERY SINGLE POST, tallying the number of blogs written about Brian, those written about Donnie, and those in which both are mentioned.

I have to admit. There are a lot of DW mentions.

So I decided to follow Brian's advice. But, before there could be a scoreboard, there had to be parameters for me to follow. Hence the following brief, but informative, interview:

With those rules in mind, I headed to the internet, certain that somewhere in the wide world of web, there would be SOMEONE who had created a completely customizable scoreboard widget. And that it would take me 10 minutes to whip one up and add it to the blog.

<Pause here for your laughter and scorn.>

In fact, there is not. Or if there is, I couldn't find it. And believe me when I say I looked. Hard. For about 5 hours.

So I decided to use my Photoshop skills to create a meme instead, which you will now see at the top right of the blog, until the end of time. I will do my BEST to update it as frequently as possible, so that Brian's insecurities will be regularly tamed.

Without further ado, here are the current standings on Abby Gabs. Out of 318 posts, Brian has been mentioned (gushed about, turned into a super hero, generally canonized) 104 times. Donnie Wahlberg has been mentioned (and occasionally worshiped) 31 times. And they have both been mentioned in the SAME blog (without incident) 21 times.

There honey. See? I do love you best.

Settling a Score

There's a new four-letter word in our house. Apparently, it starts with the letter D. And ends with -onnie Wahlberg.

Let me say, for the record, that while I do love some Donnie Wahlberg, I flat-out ADORE my husband.

However, I believe he's started feeling threatened by my increased infatuation with the New Kid and Blue Bloods star. The clues were small at first...a raised eyebrow at a mention of Donnie in my blog, eye-rolling at a new photoshopped photo of me with the Don, a passing remark that didn't quite compute but was meant to sink in.

Then he stopped being indirect about the whole thing and just let me know, in no uncertain terms, how he was feeling.

B: So. You blogged about HIM again, huh?
A: Him? Who?
B: HIM. Donnie Wahlberg.
A: Oh. I may have mentioned him, sure. Why?
B: Mentioned? You wrote an entire blog about a dream you had about HIM hugging you.
A: Aw, honey. Are you feeling jealous?

In yesterday's post, I created a photoshopped image that included some of my favorite Twitter stalkees. Donnie was, naturally, included in that image. When Brian shared my blog on his Facebook page (as he dutifully does every day, because he's a wonderful husband and I love him SO!) THIS is what it looked like:

(I know he just misspelled Donnie's name to irk me.)

At any rate, I decided that, if he's going to take score, he should at least have an accurate count. So here, honey, are a couple of lists that will help you take stock of the Donnie versus Brian phenomenon.

Conversation with My Husband

**Warning: This blog post contains pictures of, and conversations about, toes. If you have a phobia, look away now!***

Let me set up this story by saying this: My husband thinks I have cute feet. He tells me so all the time. (Although by no means does this constitute a fetish. I really do have cute toes. See?)

It's ok. You can say "Awww." They really are cute.

The other night, the hubs and I were having a nice, relaxing night at home. We were stretched out on the couch, my feet in his lap, watching bad TV. (It really is the perfect way to spend an evening.)

During a commercial break, my husband started tickling my feet. The following conversation ensued.

B: You have cute toes.
A: Just cute? Or really cute?
B: Really cute.
A: I'm glad you think so.
B: I do. In fact, I'm going to name them.
A: (Pause) You're going to name my toes. (Thinking to self: awesome blog fodder!)
B: Yes.
A: Ok. Go for it. Name my toes.
B: (Points to big toe.) This one's Tony.
A: You're naming my adorable big toe Tony?
B: Yeah, you know...."Toe-ny." (giggle)
A: Oh. I get it. Ok, who's next?
B: (Points to second toe) We'll call this one Alberto. And this one (indicating middle toe) should be Gilberto.
A: So my toes are cute AND Italian?
B: Yep. We'll round out the clan with Little Tony and Tony, Jr.
A: So, basically, I have the Italian mafia on the end of my foot.
B: Yep.

If I'd had a thought bubble over my head, it would've contained the following image:

Yep. Piedi means foot in Italian. You bet I Googled it.

And if you're thinking "I bet the only reason she told us this story was so she could put her toes in pin-striped gangster suits," you'd be correct.
